I wrote the original draft of this last June in my blog on another website. I was overall pleased with it but I just diddn’t like the fact that it was too short… Heck I’m never pleased with anything that I do. Well, hope you enjoy it.. Their is more of these things to come, so keep checking you’re feeds!
The Cocteau Twins were the band that was mostly responsible for the ethereal wave of the 1980’s. It is sad to see the influence that they have on mostly every band that followed into their footsteps, mainstream or not, popular or underground. Picking any album of theirs, it will directly remind you of something that you have heard before but the fact is, it is nothing that you ever herd before. Elizabeth Fraser’s voice in itself can be described as an instrument. It can’t be compared to anything. It is so out there, I personally use her voice as the definition for un-ineligible; too hard to explain, but easy to tell. The guitar’s of Robin Guthrie sound like some screaming spinning like trance. Comparing Robin Guthrie’s guitar work to Kevin Shields own work with My Bloody Valentine sound too strikingly similar. Again, another influence that this band has had on the music industry. Bass is somewhat relevant in this band, not very much so. With Simon Raymonde leaving the band for various reasons. On some albums it is almost an relief to hear the bass. As for sound, It is very condensed, almost like syrup, fluid moving and very, slow. Before the band obtained Raymonde, the band then had better and louder bass lines. As for drum’s, you will have to talk to the Roland drum machine. It has its pros and con’s because of the following reasons. Well, it is always good to re-create the sound scape’s of the albums at concerts, but it isn’t as good when you hear the same drum beats on every single album, but when you get used to it you start to pay attiton on the other elements on the band.
Being the collector that I am, I do have most of their major releases, but it is the dang back catalog that I still don’t have most of. I’m starting to think that most or maybe all of the catalog is in in England. From a collectors standpoint, it just the singles that I don’t like. For every album that they put out, their is at least one single out there. If I ever stop using my cd guidelines (original release, right tag number, face value, un-played,etc) it might take more than 20 years to get the entire catalog… But not to worry, that is what trade shoppes are for.-
